SMS Presents at 2024 Hawai'i Conservation Alliance

On July 31, 2024, SMS's Anna Pacheco presented findings from our recent report at the Hawaii Conservation Alliance conference. The report, titled "Characterizing Hawai'i's Natural Resources Management Sector: Jobs, Education, Salaries, & Expenditures," updates a 2019 study conducted by UHERO, often referred to as "the Green Jobs" report.

Key Highlights:

  • NRM jobs in Hawai'i grew 6.3% from 2018 to 2023, reaching at least 4,994 positions
  • Top job types include administrative support, communications, field technicians, and natural resources managers
  • Starting salaries have increased, with 90% of administrative roles and 82% of field technician positions offering $41K or higher
  • Bachelor's degrees are most common for administrative, field, and managerial roles, while executives typically hold master's degrees
  • Desired majors include Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies, Biology, Ecology, and Hawaiian Studies
  • 50% of agencies now offer paid internships, up from 47% in 2018
  • NRM expenditures totaled approximately $714 million

This comprehensive study, supported by the Hau'oli Mauli Foundation and The Nature Conservancy, provides valuable insights into workforce development opportunities in Hawai'i's NRM sector.
